Scholarships in Nuclear Science and
Engineering at Canadian Universities

 

The Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) is pleased to offer scholarships to promote Nuclear Science and Engineering to students at Canadian universities.

Two scholarships are offered in 2018: One graduate school entrance scholarship of $5,000 and two undergraduate summer research scholarships of $3,000 each.

ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRADUATE STUDIES IN NUCLEAR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

This entrance scholarship is designed to encourage undergraduate students to enter a graduate program related to Nuclear Science and Engineering at a Canadian university.

The value of the scholarship is $5,000.

The recipient of the scholarship will be selected on the basis of his/her academic standing and other information to be supplied with the application as listed below.

The Scholarship Committee of the Canadian Nuclear Society will collect and review the submissions, and make the award decisions.

Student Eligibility

The student must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at a Canadian University and be a member of the CNS.

The duration of the graduate program must be at least two years and is expected to lead to a Master's or a PhD degree.

Procedure for Application

Applications should be prepared by the student and include:

  • A recent university transcript.
  • A curriculum vitae (CV), including the extracurricular activities and achievements of the student.
  • An essay (max. 1000 words), in which the student explains his/her motivation for pursuing graduate studies in nuclear science and engineering, and gives a brief introduction to the research he/she will be performing and its relevance to Canadian Nuclear Science and Engineering.
  • A letter of support from the prospective thesis supervisor stating the quality of the student and confirming that the student will be admitted to the program. The letter should be sent directly to the address below.

Note that the scholarship is intended to complement the student's stipend, it is not to substitute (part of) it.

Deadlines

  • March 1, 2018: Submission
  • May 1, 2018: Notice of Awards
    (all applicants to be informed). The official award presentation will be made during the student awards ceremony at the CNS annual conference in Niagara Falls in June 2018.
  • September 1, 2018: Payment

Expectations

The student is encouraged to keep the CNS and its members up to date on his/her progress, by, for example, presenting a poster/paper at a CNS (Student) Conference.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is designed to encourage undergraduate students to participate in research in Nuclear Science and Engineering during the summer months.

The value of the scholarship is $3,000.

The recipient of the scholarship will be selected on the basis of his/her academic standing and other information to be supplied with the application as listed below.

The Scholarship Committee of the Canadian Nuclear Society will collect and review the submissions, and make the award decisions.

Student Eligibility

The student must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at a Canadian University for at least two years and be a member of the CNS.

The scholarship is to be matched by $2,000 from the supervisor for a total of $5,000.

Procedure for Application

Applications should be prepared by the student and include:

  • A recent university transcript.
  • A curriculum vitae (CV), including the extracurricular activities and achievements of the student.
  • A brief essay (max. 500 words), in which the student explains his/her interest in nuclear science and engineering.
  • A letter of support from the prospective supervisor stating the quality of the student and confirming that:
    • The student will be supervised for at least 12 weeks during the summer,
    • The topic of research is in the field of Nuclear Science and Engineering (brief outline of research is appreciated), and
    • The CNS scholarship will be matched with at least $2000.
